2. Rainbow Graduation Information

Are you graduating this May (or December 2016/17)?  Do you want to participate in a graduation ceremony that recognizes and celebrates the achievements of underrepresented sexual and/or gender identity(ies) at the UA? Rainbow Graduation is open to all graduating undergraduates, graduates, or professional school students (including allies) to show their fabulous wildcat pride!


Be recognized for your academic efforts and achievements at the 10th annual Rainbow Graduation on Saturday, May 6th at 4pm in Gallagher Theater in the Student Union. Graduates will receive rainbow cords, a certificate, and will be the guests of honor at a catered reception following the ceremony.

If you would like to participate, please fill out the google form here that will contain all of the below information. The only information not on the google form is the photo, which must be emailed to uarainbowgraduation@gmail.com by April 24th @ noon:

*If you are having trouble finding a presenter or have any concerns about the presenter in general, please let us know. We can work with you and can make accommodations to ensure you have the best experience possible.

Rainbow Graduation 2017:
The 10th Annual LGBTQA & Allied Graduation Celebration
Saturday, May 6th, 2017

3. Trans Caucus, March 29th

Pride Alliance will be hosting a trans caucus on Wednesday, March 29th from 5-7pm in the LGBTQ Resource Center. The Facebook event can be found here

Continuing Series


1. Support Groups

We work with many organizations across campus to offer support groups for LGBTQ identified students.
We are committed to helping you find the support you need. Here are our current groups:

LGBTQA Support Group
During Fall 2016, this group will meet every Tuesday from 4-5:30pm in room 412 of the Student Union from August 30 2016 to December 6th. This group is a safe space for UA students, staff and faculty to talk in an open and supportive environment about issues impacting their lives and the the LGBTQ and Allied community. This group is facilitated by LGBTQ staff to provide resources and guidance. It is free and confidential. For more information, contact Martie van der Voort at mvanderv@email.arizona.edu or 621-3334.

Queer People of Color & Two Spirit Discussion Group
This group will meet Thursdays 5-6:30pm in the Guerrero Student Center, Chavez Building Room 217. This is a peer to peer support group that provides a safe and comfortable environment for LGBTQ and Two Spirit students of color to connect, share experiences, and support each other.

Gender Spectrum Support Group
This group will meet every Monday during the school year from 3-4:00pm. Check in at CAPS, third floor of the Campus Health Building,

This group is designed for UA students who are dealing with gender identities outside of the traditional binary system, whether transitioning from the gender assigned at birth, identifying as some combination of genders, neither gender, or questioning the role of gender in their lives. Terms such as transsexual, two-spirit, neutroisagender, gender-queer, gender-fluid, transgender (and more) have been used to describe these identities. The low cost ($5 per group,  billable to Bursar’s,) is for those who might need support and/or therapy to process their gender identity, deal with family and friends’ reactions, identify options of a transition process, and gather resources and support for issues related to gender. For more information, contact Martie van der Voort at mvanderv@email.arizona.edu or 621-3334.

There are also many groups within the community.

2. Advanced Safe Zone and Classroom Curriculum Workshops 

The Safe Zone program includes both the General Education and Ally Development trainings. You can attend one or both trainings. Those who attend the Ally Development training must have previously completed the General Education training. Participants who complete both will receive a Safe Zone placard to display in their on campus space.  Advanced trainings occur at least once a semester and are open to anyone who has attended General Education.

Please register in advance to attend any Safe Zone training here.


Safe Zone is in the process of being digitized! Because of this process, we will not be offering regular workshops for the rest of the semester. To request a group training, please see the information below.


Please refer registration issues, special accommodations, and any questions to the Graduate Assistant for Ally Development with the Office of LGBTQ Affairs, Cole Eskridge. University Boulevard Closure
Transportation affected by this closure includes all of the following:
MOTORISTS
There will be no east or westbound traffic on University between Cherry Ave and Campbell Ave.

SUN TRAN PASSENGERS
The Optical Science bus stop on University Blvd will be relocated to Second St at Cherry Ave on the north curb.

CYCLISTS
Detour signage will be posted. Bicyclists coming from east of the closure should use the temporary protected bike lane to travel south on Campbell Avenue to west on Enke Drive, and north on Cherry Avenue.

Bicyclists coming from west of the closure should use the temporary protected bike lane to travel north on Cherry Avenue to east on Hawthorne Street, north on Warren Avenue, east on Second Street, and south on Campbell Avenue.

Alternative bike routes and temporary bike lanes will be in place for bicyclists commuting into campus. Please visithttps://parking.arizona.edu<https://parking.arizona.edu/>  a detailed map.

PEDESTRIANS
There will be signage directing pedestrians to the proper routes around the enclosed fence area.
CAT TRAN PASSENGERS
Red Route affected, will enter campus on Second St to Cherry Ave, and follow purple route to Sixth St then back to lot 9008. Please see information posted in Cat Tran for re-route.
CHERRY AVENUE CLOSURE
There will be soft closures of Cherry Ave south of Hawthorne Ave and north of 4th St at the entrance of the lot near Optical Science. Hard closures will
go up at the same time in the center area between University Blvd North and South. The closures will be April 7th-9th, 20173:30pm to 1:00am on Friday, 9:00am to 1:00am on Saturday and 9:00am to 11:00pm on Sunday.
EVENT PARKING
There is an event fee of $5 to park in Cherry Avenue and Second Street parking garages. There will also be a $5 fee to park in the following lots: 6098, 6097, 6093, 6090, 4057, 4144, 4164 and 4052. Meter rates as posted.
Parking and Transportation will provide free visitor parking in surface lots north of Speedway Blvd or south of Sixth St after 4:00pm on Friday, April 7th and all day Saturday and Sunday. There is free parking in the following garages on Saturday and Sunday, April 8th and 9th: Highland Avenue, Park Avenue Main Gate, Tyndall Avenue and 6th Street Garages.
TRASH
Spring Fling will be sending volunteers through the western part of Sam Hughes during the mornings ofApril 8th and 9th along with the early evening of April 9th to pick up trash.

The Green Fund Committee, a team of undergraduate and graduate students responsible for allocating funds for campus sustainability projects, is currently accepting applications for six at-large Committee seats. Green Fund Committee members will be responsible for reviewing grant proposals and helping to determine which projects will receive funding. Become a Tutor!

The Think Tank always accepts applications for writing, math, science and business tutors. We accept tutors from any major. We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2017 semester.

 

Benefits of being a tutor include

  • Flexible hours with consistent schedule for the term. All training is paid.
  • Opportunity to earn pay raises each term, up to 10.15/hour for lifetime CLRA (College Reading & Learning Association) tutor certification.
  • Become a leader and mentor! Master Tutors mentor new tutors and lead trainings. Interviewing, outreach, and other opportunities are also available in later terms.
  • Develop career ready skills such as communication, problem solving, deeper subject knowledge, writing skills, group facilitation, project development, and more.
  • No prior tutoring experience required, we will provide training and you’ll have a mentor tutor to guide you in your first term.
  • Gaining mastery of content knowledge and tutoring methods. Helping others learn challenges you to think about and apply your knowledge in new ways each day.
  • Meeting students from your major and from across campus.

12. Out for Undergrad Engineering Conference 2017

About the conference: 
  • Out for Undergrad is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization designed to help high-achieving LGBTQ undergrads reach their full potential.
  • LGBTQ engineering students will have the opportunity to discuss being out in the engineering industry and hear from professionals who are out in their careers. 
  • Students will network with LGBTQ peers and professionals from top engineering companies from a wide range of industries across the country. 
  • Students will have the opportunity to find LGBTQ mentors in their field. 
  • Sponsoring companies will recruit students for jobs and internships at the career fair and throughout the conference. 
  • Flights and hotel will be covered for any admitted students thanks to our sponsors. 
  • The conference will take place October 20-22 2017 .

Surveys


1. LGBTQ Health Survey

Fresh Arizona is a project funded by the Arizona Department of Health Services with the purpose of helping populations disparately impacted by tobacco use.  The project will use the data from the “Perceptions of Cigarette Smoking and Other Tobacco Product Use” to inform statewide strategies and activities to reduce initiation of tobacco use and increase access to effective tobacco use cessation services.

Adults, 18 years old and older, identifying as gender and sexual minorities – lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, and others – are thought to have much higher rates of tobacco use than the general adult population.

Fresh Arizona needs your help to better understand pathways to tobacco use and to effective cessation for adults identifying as gender or sexual minorities.

SAAF has partnered with a statewide coalition, Fresh Arizona, to learn more about the health needs in our community. They have created this survey in order to gain more insight into perceptions around tobacco use among LGBTQ adults in Arizona.

3. RoSE Survey

On behalf of Dr. Jessica Muilenburg at the University of Georgia, I invite you to participate in and share the Romantic, Sexual and Emotional health (RoSE) Study. The purpose of this study is to understand the sexual and mental health of women who love other women. Participation involves taking a 15-20 minute electronic survey – we would greatly appreciate your help!

Here are a few things you need to know about this research study:
  • You must be 18 years or older. You must identify as a woman who has romantic and/or sexual attraction to other women.
  • Due to the lack of representation of transgender, non-binary and asexual women, we especially encourage you to participate if you belong to one of those groups.

5. Anonymous Survey about Trans Experiences of Discrimination

Dear Potential Participant,

My name is Luke Allen, and I am a counseling psychology doctoral student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I am currently part of a research team, led by my adviser Dr. Watson, conducting a study investigating transgender individuals’ experiences of discrimination. In order to participate, you must a) identify as an individual of transgender experience (for example, gender queer, trans woman, trans man, nonbinary trans individual, gender fluid, and so on), b) be 18 years of age or older, and c) be able to read the English language.

6. Trans/Gender-Nonconforming College & Graduate Students Project 

Abbie Goldberg, a Professor of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester MA, is conducting a survey of trans/gender-nonconforming college students (including recent graduates) and graduate students regarding their perspectives and experiences on a range of topics, including trans advocacy and needed supports/services on college campuses.Students with non-binary gender identities are particularly encouraged to participate, as their experiences are rarely represented in research. Students may participate if they identify as trans, gender-nonconforming, gender questioning, genderqueer, agender, or anywhere on the gender-nonconforming spectrum. The survey, which was informed by focus groups and consultation with trans/gender nonconforming college students, takes about 25-30 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous. Individuals can elect to be entered in a lottery for one of 10 $50.00 Amazon gift cards; individuals’ names and email addresses will not be connected to or traceable to the data that they provide.

7. Cambridge Survey on Gender Minority Adults

We are researchers at the Gender Development Research Centre, the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. We are now recruiting gender minority adults and cisgender adults (aged 18 years or above) to participate in an online survey looking at social adjustment and psychological well-being of gender minorities. We hope to learn more about similarities and differences between different groups and how things can be improved for gender minorities. This survey will take at least 20 minutes and all participants will be entered into a prize draw.

    In our survey, gender minorities are broadly defined as individuals whose gender identity and/or expression do not conform to the norms for the individuals’ sex/gender assigned at birth (e.g., individuals with gender dysphoria, transgender individuals, agender individuals, individuals with non-binary gender identities, and etc). Cisgenders refer to individuals whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.

    As part of the recruitment, we are contacting directors and/or administrative officers of societies/groups/organisations offering support and services to gender minority adults. We would be very grateful, if you could kindly consider helping us to circulate the survey web link below via mailing lists, social media, and other ways that you see fit.
