NAFSA Rainbow Special Interest Group

Image result for nafsa rainbow special interest groupThe Rainbow SIG is comprised of diverse members of NAFSA whose goals are to counsel international students and study abroad students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered; to support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered professionals in international education; to combat homophobia, heterosexism and transphobia within NAFSA. Opinions stated on these pages are those of the authors. No assumptions about an individual’s sexual orientation should be made from his or her participation in the SIG.

 

Indiana University's Office of Overseas Study - GLBT 

The Office of Overseas Study encourages all students to consider making study abroad part of their degree program. They: 

  • Provide a bibliography about the GLBT community from an international perspective.
  • Include sections in our handbooks about sexual identity.
  • Encourage our program sites overseas to keep information available about local GLBT support groups.
  • Stay in close contact with the GLBT Student Support Services office on the IUB campus.
  • Partner with institutions that are also committed to providing support, including CIEE (see their pamphlet, Identity: Sexual and Gender Expression Abroad, offering an overview of issues related to sexual orientation and gender expression) and IES Abroad (see their video in support of the It Gets Better campaign).
  • Stay in close contact with the GLBT Student Support Services office on the IUB campus. 

 

International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) is a leading international organization dedicated to human rights advocacy on behalf of people who experience discrimination or abuse on the basis of their actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

 

NAFSA Rainbow Special Interest Group

Immigration Equality is a national organization fighting for equality under U.S. immigration law for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV-positive individuals. They have a booklet on Sexual Orientation and Immigration that was published by the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task Force to inform both immigrants and non-immigrant visa holders of their rights in the US.
