DARKMATTER is a trans south asian performance art duo compromised of Alok Vaid-Menon and Janani Balasubramanian. Based in New York City, DarkMatter regularly performs to sold-out houses at venues like La MaMa Experimental Theater, Nuyorican Poets Café, and the Asian American Writer’s Workshop. DarkMatter was recently part of the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Festival as well as the Queer International Arts Festival. This is a peer to peer discussion group that provides a safe environment to connect, share experiences, and show support for each other.

This benefits the Joel Meister Scholarship Fund, remembering a former member of the chorus and the board of directors for Reveille Men's Chorus. As a retired professor of public health at the UA, the chorus adopted its public health mission to bring understanding around LGBT and AIDS issues. After his pasing, the chorus felt that his commitment to tackling tough issues through music should be honored. Reveille dedicated the scholarship fund to his memory and dedication.

Tucson Transgender Advocacy Group Reorganizes
(TUCSON, AZ) The Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA) today announced that it has reorganized as an Arizona nonprofit corporation in order to continue its work supporting Southern Arizona’s transgender and gender nonconforming community, a role it has served in the community for nearly 17 years. The organization’s official name is now “Southern Arizona Gender Alliance, Inc.”
“We believe the future is very bright for trans people, and we appreciate the support we have received from our allies in the media, the government, and the public, since our founding,” said SAGA co-founder Kevin Q. Maxey, MD, who was appointed Chair Emeritus of the Board at the first meeting of the Board of Directors. “However, substantial barriers remain to the well-being of trans people in employment, housing, health care, and many other facets of our lives. SAGA continues to represent Southern Arizona’s gender variant people and their families, and we take an active role in creating a world free from bias, stereotyping, and discrimination based on gender identity or expression.”
In addition to Dr. Maxey, the incorporating directors and officers of the board include Miki Odawa, President; Abby Louise Jensen, Vice President; C. Michael Woodward, Treasurer; and Erin M. Russ, Secretary.
One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the country, SAGA was initially formed in 1998 by a group of transgender individuals in Tucson who realized that the community needed an organization to support transgender and other gender-variant people. At the time of its formation, SAGA was an informal, grassroots group that met regularly in borrowed rooms and worked on an ad-hoc basis. In 2004, SAGA merged with its fiscal sponsor, Wingspan LGBT Community Center, to create a stronger, more visible organization.
With the closing of the community center in summer 2014, SAGA members agreed it was time to return the organization to independent status. SAGA has now incorporated and applied for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to insure its future success and independence. (Once approved, that status will be retroactive to the date of its incorporation, November 17, 2014.)

The Victory Congressional Fellowship, a year-long, full-time congressional fellowship beginning May 27, is now accepting applications through February 17.
The Victory Institute will bring an emerging LGBTQ leader to Washington, D.C., for a year-long intensive fellowship. The program includes travel to and from Washington, D.C.; a generous stipend of $28,000 through May 25, 2016; reimbursement for health insurance of up to $400 per month; as well as paid registration for the LGBT Leaders 2015Conference in Las Vegas, NV, this November.
The fellow will support the executive director of the LGBT Congressional Equality Caucus, co-chaired by six of the openly LGB members of Congress. Applicants with strong written communications and web skills are highly preferred, regardless of academic degree and major. Future fellows may support a particular congressional office or committee.

2015 Summer Internship for Housing & LGBT Concerns
Graduate Student Internship – Joint appointment with Housing Services and LGBT Resource Center
Full time, 6 weeks – Start date Tuesday, June 16, end date Friday, July 24, 2015.
Room and board June 15 – July 24, 2015 at a rate equal to wages paid + $425 stipend.

Intern will receive supervision by LGBT Resource Center staff and training on aspects of directing an LGBT Resource Center (programming, training, advocacy, budgeting), as well as gain valuable experiences working with a large housing program. Activities include:
Project – Intern will develop and complete a project to be shared with members of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals. The project will be developed once the intern is on-site.
Housing Activities – Intern will meet with Housing staff to determine tasks or activities that will assist in the development of Residence Life training and programming (e.g. training modules for Housing student staff, program efforts with Stonewall Hall, Welcome Week planning).
Summer Orientation Activities – Intern will help facilitate “Building Commons Ground” sessions during New Student Orientation, working alongside staff in the ethnic and gender program offices. Intern may also assist with outreach tabling during the Activities Expos.
Professional Development Activities – Intern will participate in staff discussions regarding student affairs issues, supplemented by readings and resources, on topics such as career development, professional/personal boundaries, budgeting, and serving diverse student populations.
Center Activities – Intern will interact with students and visitors to the LGBT Resource Center, including opportunities to facilitate student discussion groups or present summer programs.
Site Visits – Intern will visit LGBT Resource Centers at campuses such as UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU San Bernardino, the Claremont Colleges, CSU San Marcos, and UCLA.
Currently enrolled graduate student within a student affairs graduate program. Experience working with Housing/Residence Life or with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender students in a higher education environment. The successful candidate will understand sexual orientation, gender identity, and student development issues; be sensitive to the effects of racism, sexism, heterosexism, genderism, and other forms of oppression on the student experience; and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

This year again PFLAG Tucson will be awarding several $1,000 LGBT scholarships in the name Gene Moore, our past president, and one $1,000 scholarship in the name of Art and Mark Woodland. These scholarships will go to southern Arizona high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students to attend an institution of higher education, wherever that may be.

This scholarship honors the life and work of Monique Wittig, French novelist, poet and social theorist. Wittig was a professor at the University of Arizona, Tucson from 1990 to 2003. First published as a novelist, Wittig’s fiction revolutionized French literature. Mary McCarthy called her “the best writer anywhere of her generation.” Wittig’s fiction, as well as theoretical writing, has had a fundamental and worldwide impact upon feminist theory and lesbian and gay theory.
In honor of Wittig, the Monique Wittig Writer’s Scholarship will foster innovation in literary forms and the connection between politics and language. It will allow University of Arizona graduate and undergraduate students to allocate more time to their writing.
This scholarship is open to writers in all fields including literature, film, theater, poetry, essays and new/mixed media. The winner will be expected to present from the work in progress at the awards ceremony toward the end of the spring 2014 semester.
Applications should include the application form (here) and a cover letter indicating how the student’s work addresses the political and artistic goals of the scholarship, and how the project relates to the student’s other work, and where possible, the work of Monique Wittig. It should also include a writing sample (or other artistic sample) from the project that will be helped by the award, and a plan that demonstrates how the scholarship will aid the student in completing his/her project.

The UCR LGBT Resource Center is pleased to announce the Second BlaqOUT Conference on April 10-11, 2015 @ University of California, Riverside.
We cordially invite all folks who self identify as Black/African American or of African Descent and as Same Gender Loving, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning or somewhere on the LGBTQ Spectrum, to apply to attend.
If you are an ally to our communities, we encourage you to attend the QPOC Conference on May 1-3, 2015 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The QPOC Conference is open to all individuals.
Through this conference, we hope to create safe and courageous spaces that foster the discussion of issues relevant to those who self identify as Black/African American or of African Communities on the LGBTQ Spectrum. Various Workshops, keynotes, and activities will be designed to unite our community and equip us with the resources necessary to face issues that affect us as marginalized individuals.
The workshop proposal form will be available online in January 2015.
The general application to attend will open online in February; please apply by March 28th, 2015.
Once you have been selected for the BlaqOUT Conference, you have until April 3, 2015 to pay registration fees or your spot will be given to another individual. Registration is $20 with a T-Shirt included in the registration fee. If you do not want a T-Shirt, Reduced Registration is $10.
ASUA handles more than a 1 million dollar budget, oversees all clubs and organizations on campus, and has access to President Hart and many other important administrators! It's time to make it representative and a diverse place for different ideas and identities to thrive!
