1. LGBTQ Mental  Health Forum, April 23rd from 3-5pm

Join us at the Career Services Classroom from 3-5pm on 4/23 for a forum to discuss mental health issues in the LGBTQA+ community. There will be a panel of LGBTQA+ speakers, as well as a facilitated discussion about what we can do to improve the health of the community


2. "To be Takei" Film Screening, April 23rd from 6-9pm

Join LGBTQ Affairs, APASA, and the CGA for a movie screening of the film To Be Takei, which looks at the many roles played by activist George Takei. It will be from 6-9pm in Chavez room 111.

Safe Zone is happy to present "Trans 101". This Advanced Safe Zone will provide an overview of gender identity and expression, discuss terminology and definitions, identify disparities and risks within the trans community, dispel myths and misunderstandings, and explain specific ways you can be an ally to trans people everywhere. It's especially fitting with the wonderful guest that we have coming on May 4th (Laverne Cox!) 

This advanced-level workshop is limited to individuals who have completed the Safe Zone General Education training. Registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome! The workshop will be from 1-3pm on Friday, April 24th in the Saguaro Room at El Portal

4. Laverne Cox comes to UA! May 4th, 7pm 

LGBTQ Affairs and WEB are bringing you an evening with Laverne Cox, trans superstar from the show "Orange is the New Black" and all-around amazing person. The event will take place in the SUMC Grand Ballroom on Monday, May 4th at 7pm (but doors open at 6pm). The event is Free with a Catcard and $20 at the door for the public.There are no advanced ticked sales

5. 7th Annual Rainbow Graduation, May 8th at 6pm

Are you graduating this May (or December 2015)?  Do you want to participate in a graduation ceremony for students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual or allied? Rainbow Graduation is open to all graduating undergraduates, graduates, or professional school students to show their fabulous wildcat pride!

Be recognized for your academic efforts and achievements at the 8th annual Rainbow Graduation on Friday, May 8th at 6pm in Gallagher Theater in the Student Union. Graduateswill receive rainbow cords, a certificate, and will be the guests of honor at a catered reception following the ceremony.

Rainbow Graduation 2015:
The 8th Annual LGBTQA & Allied GraduationCelebration
Friday, May 8th, 2015

6-8pm 
Gallagher Theater, Student Union, 1303 E. University

This festive and intimate end-of-the-year celebration will provide personal recognition of graduating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual (LGBTQA) and allied seniors, as well as graduating graduate school and professional school students at The University of Arizona. Each graduate will receive a rainbow cord and certificate of honor, and a catered reception will follow the ceremony.  You must register by April 24th to participate.

1. Support Groups

LGBTQ Affairs provides support groups to people who need some support in their lives. Those include: 

LGBTQA+ Support Group
Tuesdays 4-5:30pm in the SUMC Room 412 (4th Floor Conference Room)

This is a safe space for UA students, faculty, and staff to talk in an open and supportive environment about issues impacting their lives and the LGBTQA+ and Allied community. 

Gender Spectrum Support Group
Mondays 3-4pm in the 3rd Floor Highland Commons, SE Corner

This is a support, therapy, and education group for UA students dealing with gender identity, gender dysphoria, and issues related to gender. There is a $5 a week charge, that can be billed to Bursar's

QPOC and Two-Spirit Discussion Group
Thursdays 5:30-6:30pm in Nugent Room 203

This is a peer to peer discussion group that provides a safe environment  to connect, share experiences, and show support for each other.

3. Masculinity and Men of Color discussion group, April 21st from 5-6:30pm 

This discussion group will provide a safe space for all students to connect and share experiences around masculinity in higher education. Because of the declining college enrollments of men of color and low income backgrounds, this group will meet to discuss challenges of masculinity and intersecting identities.

This event will be at APASA/NASA on the 2nd floor of the Nugent building on Tuesday, April 21st from 5-6:30pm.

                Who are you when you’re from everywhere and nowhere? Come find out, Wednesday, April 22, at 7 p.m., on the UA campus, Education Building, Kiva Room where Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey will be presented. The production is sponsored through the collaborative efforts of the University of Arizona Libraries, FORCE, UA Women’s Resource Center, Asian Pacific American Student Affairs, the Common Ground Alliance, Adalberto and Ana Guerrero Student Center, and Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry.

                Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey is a funny and poignant one-woman show about growing up as a dual citizen of mixed heritage in Central America, North Africa, the Middle East and New England.

5. 'The Hunting Ground' screening at the Loft, FREE for UA students, April 25th at 7pm

The Loft Theater’s education staff is hosting a U of A night, on Saturday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m., where they will give free entry to any college student with a valid college ID, with a post-film Q&A with the film's Director, KIrby Dick.

From acclaimed writer/director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering, the filmmaking team behind the Oscar-nominated documentary The Invisible War, comes The Hunting Ground, a piercing, monumental exposé of rape culture on campuses, poised to light a fire under a national debate. In a tour de force of verité footage, expert insights, and first-person testimonies, the film follows undergraduate rape survivors pursuing both their education and justice, despite ongoing harassment and the devastating toll on them and their families. Scrutinizing the gamut of elite Ivies, state universities, and small colleges, filmmakers Dick and Ziering reveal an endemic system of institutional cover-ups, rationalizations, victim-blaming, and denial that creates perfect storm conditions for predators to prey with impunity. 7. CSW Workshop for Emerging Leaders, May 7th

Where: Silver and Sage room in Old Main
When: 5:30-6:30pm on  May 7th

This workshop series, featured recently in Lo Que Pasa, will bring together UA campus and Tucson community leaders who whose talks will focus on the key qualities that emerging leaders need to succeed in the dynamic, twenty-first century workplace. The CSW Workshops for Emerging Leaders will address the following questions:

·         What key traits should emerging leaders develop to advance equity, opportunity, and diversity in the workplace?

·         How can emerging leaders think differently to shape a better workplace and a more engaged community?

·         How can leaders respond effectively to micro-aggressions or utilize kindness to effectively build their team and organization?

These workshops are open to anyone on campus or in the community. Workshops allow time for questions, as well as for networking with speakers and other audience members. Through consistent, monthly dialogue, we will build a stronger community of future leaders who are committed to equity, opportunity, and balance for a diverse workforce.

Light refreshments will be provided and there is no need to RSVP; however, space may be limited based on demand.

1. oSTEM Executive Board Positions Available for 2015-16 School Year!

Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (oSTEM) seeking Executive Board members for 2015-16 school year

oSTEM is seek a few committed and passionate LGBT+/allied students to fill our executive board for next school year! Together, the e-board works to plan meetings and events that coincide with our organizational goal of encouraging greater LGBT+ leadership and visibility in STEM science fields. We are looking to hold elections for the following positions: President, VP of Administration, VP of Community, VP of Finance, VP of OUTreach, and general Executive Staff. General requirements and preferred qualifications are as follows:

Required:
(1) Be a current undergraduate/graduate student at the University of Arizona in good academic standing.
(2) Active participation during and attendance to bi-weekly executive board meetings
(3) Plan and execute bi-monthly general body meetings with intermediate social, professional development, and networking events.
(4) Assist in the set-up and cleaning up before/after and attendance at events/meetings
(5) Flexibility, works well in team settings, and has the ability to complete delegated tasks in a timely and appropriate manner.

(6) able to commit around 10 hours monthly to administering oSTEM and attending events/meetings

Preferred:
(1) Participation in oSTEM Executive Board retreat (the weekend before the start of the school year, Aug 21-23), where we will plan events for the upcoming school year in Bisbee, AZ (cost: ~$100 for the weekend)

  2. Publicize all events/meetings to general membership and campus community including, but not limited to, emailing the listserv, posting to the facebook group, “tweeting”, creating posters/flyers, distributing posters/flyers, etc.
  3. Brainstorming and planning social activities for oSTEM@UA

Vice-President of Finance:

  1. Attend ASUA club workshop at beginning of elected semester.
  2. Keep a ledger of oSTEM’s finances (excel spreadsheet, etc)
  3. Submit reimbursement form for events, food, etc.
  4. Oversee financial dealings
  5. Maintain oSTEM@UA’s club bank account.

Vice-President of OUTreach:

  1. Maintain partnerships and communication with other UA student organizations/offices.
  2. Manage volunteer opportunities in our community (UA, Tucson, LGBT, etc.)
  3. Serve as a liason to other organizations.
  4. Attend semesterly LGBT+ Leaders meeting with President.

General Executive Staff (3-4 positions)

  1. Contribute the  administration of oSTEM with tasks delegated by the VP of Administration
  2. Collaborate with the executive to plan and execute meetings/events

2. Research participants needed: LGBTQ opinions on government 

Researchers from the School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona are studying attitudes among the LGBTQ community in Arizona. They are recruiting participants to take part in a brief and completely anonymous online survey regarding their opinions of politics and government officials. The researchers are interested in finding out why members of Arizona’s LGBTQ community do or do not choose to participate in politics and what their opinions are regarding current government officials both here in Arizona and in Washington D.C. Responses from non-LGBTQ identified people are valuable and are also encouraged to participate. This survey should take 10-15 minutes and has received UA IRB approval.

Your participation would facilitate a better understanding of what motivates this important part of our population to engage in the democratic process. Thank you!

3. Research participants needed: Generations Project

You are invited to participate in the GENERATIONS PROJECT - A study about the lives and experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people. Your input will help in understanding problems that face our community.
Eligible participants will receive a $75 incentive to participate in an interview.

4. Donna Swaim Travel Scholarship

Are you interested in sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking prevention? Do you want to gain event planning experience or be a part of an on-campus movement? If you said yes to either of these questions, then you should consider applying for the UA ‘s Oasis Program Against Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Fall 2015 Student’s Promoting Empowerment and Consent (SPEAC) internship!

SPEAC is a social justice-oriented student group dedicated to raising awareness about sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking. Through education and outreach, SPEAC aims to advocate for survivors, inspire action within the UA student community, and challenge the culture and social structures that perpetuate sexual and relationship violence.

5. Out for Undergrad's Marketing Conference 

Out for Undergrad (O4U) seeks to connect high-achieving LGBT students with top-tier companies across the financial, consulting and tech industries. This year, they  are launching a new conference called the Out for Undergrad Marketing Conference (OUMC), where we will connect students with recruiters from top consumer packaged goods, retail and marketing firms 

The conference will be held in October 2015. Because of O4U’s fantastic sponsors, attendees' airfare, food, and lodging are entirely paid for through scholarships.

6. Richard Roberts Scholarship for Spring 2015

The Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) would like to announce the Richard “Dick” Roberts Scholarship for spring 2015.  The Richard “Dick” Roberts Memorial Scholarship has been established by The Associated Students of the University of Arizona to honor the late Dick Roberts and his service and dedication to the university. Dick Roberts, fondly referred to as Uncle Dick, was a phenomenal student advocate and was instrumental in supporting students throughout his time at the university.

Dick Roberts believed in giving students the opportunity to gain the “complete student experience” throughout their time at The University of Arizona. This experience included the opportunity for students to engage in learning both inside and out of the classroom. Dick Robert’s hope for every student was that they would thrive in the classroom, get involved on campus, stay connected to their friends and family and contribute to the community.

In order to work towards making Dick Robert’s vision become a reality, this scholarship has been established to assist students of The University of Arizona on their path to a degree and success beyond graduation. Details of the scholarship are as follows:

Description:

  • Four ($1,500.00) Scholarships
  • Awarded upon merit and financial need and based on Scholarship, Leadership and Service to the University of Arizona Community
  • To be used for the academic year 2015 – 2016

Criteria:

  • The applicant must be a University of Arizona student enrolled in classes for the Spring 2015 semester
  • Minimum cumulative G.P.A. 2.75
  • The applicant must have completed 12 units (Undergraduate) or 7 units (Graduate) in the previous semester

Timeline:

  • Applications are available starting Monday, April 8, 2015
  • Applications are due Friday, April 24, 2015 @ noon to the ASUA Front Desk (3rd floor of the SUMC)
  • Scholarships will be awarded by the week of May 4th.

7. METRO Center of Tucson mentorship program


There's a fun new opportunity available for UA students and other volunteers to mentor youth from at-risk environments right here in Tucson. The METRO Center of Tucson is offering a program, called I Choose Me, that is different from many other mentoring models. We emphasize youth and their mentors working in groups and being involved in the community. Whether it's organizing an event or volunteering in a community garden, mentors and mentees build relationships while participating in projects and service.

We are seeking motivated individuals to be volunteer mentors in the I Choose Me program. Mentoring with METRO is a great way to help young people succeed while building one's own aptitude for working with youth and teaching life-skills.

8. CHCI Paid Fall 2015 Congressional Internship

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute is accepting applications for their paid Fall 2015 Congressional Internship through April 24th

The Congressional Internship Program provides college students with a paid work placement in a Congressional Office or Federal Agency for a period of twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (Summer). This unmatched experience allows students to learn first hand about our nation's legislative process.

Promising Latino undergraduates from across the country are selected for this leadership training program.  Students gain work experience, participate in a community service project, and receive educational and professional programming provided by CHCI. This comprehensive three-prong approach provides extraordinary learning and networking opportunities for students.

Are you interested in exploring social justice and everyday activism? This three credit course is designed for students interested in diving deeper and advancing their own social justice education in order to take a leadership role with organizing workshops, designing action projects, participating in community activism, facilitating small group dialogue, and studying the relevance and importance of identifying and resisting the manifestations of oppression. Participants will be invited to engage in regular on-going personal reflection, and use provided readings to advance their knowledge and ability to engage in both learning and taking action for social change. 

This 300 level course is geared towards students who have participated in the Intergroup Dialogue Spring Course but is open to students with a strong interest in social justice education. Students interested in facilitating in the Spring Dialogue Course must take this program to be considered for a future facilitation position.

Through this 3-credit course, students can expect:

1.       Weekly 2 hour group meetings facilitated by both graduate and professional staff.

2.       Weekly readings and journal assignments that will encourage increased knowledge of how oppression impacts different identities.

3.       The opportunity to design and execute a small group project to address oppression on campus or in the community.

LRC 595a - Race, Gender & Sexuality in Children’s & Young Adult Literature

In this course, we will examine issues of race, gender, and sexuality as they intersect across a variety of texts including picture books, chapter books, young adult novels and graphic novels. We will pay particular attention to texts by queer authors of color and bilingual books that reflect the growing Chican@/Latin@ (im)migrant population in U.S. schools. Readings will include articles from critical, feminist, and queer theorists as well as researchers who draw from a variety of methodological approaches including: narrative, textual, discourse and critical content analysis. These readings will help frame how we read and examine books by award winning authors such as: Maya Christina Gonzalez, Jacqueline Woodson, Rigoberto Gonzalez, Malinda Lo, Nancy Garden, Meg Medina, Ann Peters, and Alex Sanchez to name a few. The major projects in the class will include the development of a text set around student directed themes as well as a substantive research/analytical paper. During this class, we will also examine the epistemological, curricular, and pedagogical implications for implementing these texts into classrooms across a variety of settings. This course is beneficial to educators, scholars, and teachers interested in the ways in which feminist, racialized, linguistic, queer, and transgender perspectives are represented in books written for both children and youth.

Through education and outreach, SPEAC aims to advocate for survivors, inspire action within the UA student community, and challenge the culture and social structures that perpetuate sexual and relationship violence.

17. Federal Relations Summer and Fall Internship

Alternative Breaks is currently searching for 12 site leaders to lead our winter and spring Alternative Breaks trips! 

As a site leader, you are responsible for planning a service-based trip of 12-15 students to anywhere in the US! You will plan all logistics for the trip including, but not limited to, the social issue you will work with, the housing site, the reflections, and much more! For more information on duties and responsibilities, please see below. Cost of the trip for site leaders is half of the participant fee ($350 for flying trips and $100 for driving trips).

Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Plan and implement all logistics for trip including service site, housing site, reflections, meals, and free day activities.

·         Hold 4 all trip meetings with participants and advisor(s) prior to the trip. 

·         Plan and implement pre-trip and post-trip service opportunities in Tucson. 

·         Plan and implement fundraising activities. 

·         Manage participant application process including grading applications and updating participant list throughout the year.

·         Attend 1:1 meetings with AB advisor and Associate Director of Alternative Breaks in spring semester. 

·         Attend weekly 1 hour Site Leader meetings beginning in September and ending in March.
